White Dove Loft & Releases only uses pure bred rock doves (thoroughbred homing pigeons) which are from the scientific bird order of Columbiformes, family Columbidae which includes both doves and pigeons.

Doves have long been symbols of peace and when Jesus was baptized it is recorded in the gospels that the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove.

Doves and Pigeons will mate for life.  The male, known as a cock, and his mate, known as a hen will lay two white eggs.  Approximately 17 days after the second egg is laid the young squabs hatch.  Pigeons produce a "pigeon milk" that they use to feed their young.  The squabs grow so quickly that in about 4 weeks after they hatch they are ready to be weaned.

Pigeons have an innate homing ability that scientists don't fully understand.  It is thought there is an internal compass that the birds have that assists them in returning to their loft.  Pigeons can home from distances of 400 to 600 miles.  Wild pigeons do not have the long distance homing ability that a thoroughbred bird has developed.   White Doves (homing pigeons) are very peaceful birds that make an excellent family hobby.
